Movie review: London Dreams

Take a bow, the rockstars arrive

In Bollywood, everyone likes to be called a “Rockstar”. I have always wondered what does “Rockstar” mean for Bollywood, but I am still in utter confusion. Sanju Baba is a rockstar because he went to jail so many times, Sallu is a rock star because he drove his car over few poor people sleeping on the street, Fardeen Khan is a rockstar because he was caught with drugs. Basically, any doper, smoker is called a rockstar in Bollywood. This movie takes this obsession to another level by projecting two forty plus men with sagging cheeks and who can’t sing for their lives as rockstars.

Vipul Shah calls this movie a musical Sholay and compares it to Mamma Mia. Any movie with two male leads automatically becomes some kind of Sholay, I guess. And then there is an article about this movie being inspired by the legendary rivalry between Mozart and Salieri. I mean, how full of crap. Read the excuse for a plot and then you will understand what I mean. If you really want to see a good movie based on their rivalry watch Amadeus.

The music of self proclaimed musicals like this one should have been great. But the music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is an average fair and is put down by inane lyrics penned by Prasoon Joshi. Sample this – “Man ko ati bhave saiyyan, kare ta tha thaiya”

Salman Khan with his accent irritates like never before. The character of Mannu essayed by him is one hell of an idiotic portrayal. Ajay Devgn does not suit the role at all. This would go down in history as his second worst performance after RGV ki Aag.

And what is Asin doing in the movie? Which rock band has a female dancer in the background doing stupid dance moves? I guess in a world where Sallu and Ajay Devgn play rockstars anything is possible. The sidey actors are in the movie just as fillers. No one registers any presence.

The movie is one bad experience. The rock concert in London and other European cities looks so phony. Even if London was full of Gujjus and Pakistanis, their number would not be sufficient to fill up the Wembley stadium.

Verdict: Sometimes a movie is so bad that it is good. This movie is not that bad.

Disclaimer: I have not seen the movie.

Wishing Akshay Kumar a very happy Birthday

Akshay KumarHe is one man for whom fear knows no meaning. All that he knows is that he is a 'Player', under whose wings, even winning takes immense pride to be associated with. He is none other than the 'Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi' Akshay Kumar, who celebrates his grand birthday today. Akki (as he is affectionately called), in his own way, showed (read 'proved') to the world that 'one does not need a famous surname to make it really Big in Bollywood'!

Having started his career as a cook on the foreign shores, Akshay is an epitome of the fact about 'What hard work can do to a person'. His success in Bollywood can be attributed less to the 'call of his Lady Luck' and more to his dedication and sincerity. A testimony to this fact is in the form of some of the most iconic films that the B-O window has ever seen, which includes the 'Khiladi' series, Yeh Dillagi, Mohra, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Dil To Pagal Hai, Hera Pheri, Khakee, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Singh Is Kinng...the list is practically endless! And if the buzz around his reality show 'Khatron Ke Khiladi -Season 2' and the magnum opus flick Blue (which is just around the corner) are anything to go by, then, people, waste no time to crown today's Birthday Boy Akki as the 'Numero Uno' of Bollywood till eternity!

I don't believe in VIP culture, says SRK

In an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan spoke about his detention at the US airport and denied that it was a publicity stunt for his upcoming movie My Name Is Khan.

Shah Rukh said it was an unpleasant experience and he would never do something like this for publicity.

Here is an excerpt of the interview -

Rajdeep Sardesai: Critics are saying that Shah Rukh Khan's detention in America has been hyped by Shah Rukh himself and it is a publicity stunt for the upcoming film My Name Is Khan. How do you react to that?

Shah Rukh Khan: As a matter of fact my film is coming much later, there are still some eight to nine months to go and we normally don't start promotion of the movie this early. Moreover, it is not very positive when someone asks you for vouching for you to enter someone's country. Though I don't want to say this word, I would say it is a bit disrespectful.

Rajdeep Sardesai: People are detained and questioned in American airports post 9/11, this is a regular practice there. Then why should suddenly Shah Rukh Khan take it as a personal upfront? Was it that how can you detain me, I am Shah Rukh Khan?

Shah Rukh Khan: No, I am very humble about what I am. I may talk about myself when I talk about my films otherwise I am very humble. I am very scared of rules and therefore always abide by them. Like everyone even I had those instances when I have been subjected to very thorough special security checking.

Rajdeep Sardesai: The problem perhaps in India is that our security system is not tough enough. We still work on VIP system where a Shah Rukh Khan or a big politician can easily walk through an airport without being checked.

Shah Rukh Khan: Whenever I am flying I always stand in queues and make my children do the same.

Rajdeep Sardesai: You don't believe in VIP culture?

Shah Rukh Khan: No, I never called anyone asking please get me inside faster. I have not done that even in a night club. Even in India I don't believe in saying 'don't you know who I am' when I am asked for my identification.

Mumbai: No one sells like Shah Rukh Khan in Bollywood. Even before the release of ‘My Name is Khan’, his film is being seen as a hit considering the hype surrounding every little detail of the film.

Latest news has it that Fox Star Studio has reportedly bought the rights of the film for a whopping Rs 100 crores! Added to this, the film is said to be rich on music side as well with songs having chartbusting potential.
Critics, who have seen the rushes of MNIK, were overwhelmed by what they saw and heard. They were all praises for the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music composers and director Karan Johar.

‘My Name is Khan’ has been in news for all the right reasons. Super hit onscreen couple SRK and Kajol will be seen together after a long time. Written by Shibani Bathija, the film is about a Muslim (Shah Rukh) who suffers from the Asperger syndrome, a form of autism that impacts social interaction abilities, and he is arrested as a suspected terrorist in post-9/11 Los Angeles after authorities mistake his disability for suspicious behaviour.
